Other than the Okavango Delta, the country's most popular destination, Botswana has a host of other natural resources waiting to be explored. You mustn’t miss the Central Kalahari Wildlife Reserve, the world's largest nature reserve, which occupies 10% of Botswana's surface. The variety of its landscapes - sand dunes to the north, central savannah, forests in the south - and its vastness will leave you speechless. Remember to stock up on water, food and fuel before penetrating this huge wilderness where San tribes, commonly called Bushmen roam the plains. Another natural wonder exists to the east, near the border with Zimbabwe: the Makgadikgadi Pans, which are vast salt plains that form one of the largest salt deserts of the world. This is all that remains of a huge lake (the size of Switzerland!) that dried up thousands of years ago. Situated in the heart of the Kalahari, it's waterlogged during the rainy season and becomes a magnet for wildlife. Imagine grasslands and savannah as far as the eye can see, dotted with giant baobab trees and hordes of grazing wildebeest and antelope; what better way to make the African dream in your childhood books become a reality?
