My suggestion

Go there during the week; avoid weekends and the southern part of the island! If you rent a scooter you'll have the freedom to do as you please. Note that taxis are hard to find.

Cat Ba is the biggest island in the Cat Ba archipelago which is near Ha Long bay, in the north of Vietnam, and is largely a designated national park.

My suggestion

Trips to Cat Ba and Ha Long bays from the island are a little less busy but just as beautiful as those organised from Ha Long bay itself, so ideal for avoiding the biggest crowds.

Cat Ba Island is located 25 kilometers from Halong Bay, and visitors go there for its nature reserve, its beaches, and its breathtaking views.

The short hike near to the electrical installation is not to be missed, because the panoramic view is so spectacular!
