I recommend a stop at Vientiane mainly to those who wish to take a break during the long journey between the north and the south of the country.

My suggestion

The Pha That Luang, which is the symbol of Laos, is well worth the visit. The huge reclining Buddha located behind it is certainly impressive. The easiest way of getting there from the city centre is by tuk-tuk.

Compared to other Asian capitals, Vientiane is incredibly peaceful and quiet. The town seems to live to the gentle rythym of the Mekong, which laps the fringes of the town.
