Today it's the administrative capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The city lies at the foot of Mount Gephel. Visit the Potal Palace, formerly the chief residence of the Dalai Lama, who governed the state before Tibet came under Chinese administration. The name Lhassa literally means the 'place of gods'. Former capital of the Kingdom of Tibet, it remains today the economic, commercial and religous hub of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. For a long time foreigners were forbidden entry to the city (and it's still a controlled area) , but, nonetheless, Lhassa has rapidly evolved. From old lanes to sprawling arterial roads, ancient palaces/monasteries to modern bars and trendy stores, this town is a myriad of contrasts and it's worth staying a while. The Potala Palace, the temple of Jokhang and the Norbulingka Park are all must-see UNESCO World Heritage Sites . After a few days sightseeing, hiking fans will enjoy exploring these Tibetan lands, with monasteries dotted around the surrounding summits.
