The industrial heritage is in honour of Karaganda and is a great opportunity to learn the country's mining history, whilst Shymkent is centred more around the oil industry (the mountains and surrounding areas are breathtaking). Finally for those interested in visiting the religious monuments and the history, it's worth visiting Pavlodar (and its impressive mosque) and Turkestan, a legendary desert city intertwined with persian and tribal culture, and a  mausoleum classed as a Unesco World Heritage site.
