That was a great travelling experience. We have a few remarks, though:
1. Varanasi was definitely the most exciting place to be. Though, we didn't visit the Golden Temple and the well of knowledge. Here's what happened:
on arrival at the airport we were welcomed by Mr. Nittin who explained the plan for the next two days. He introduced to us the driver and escorted us to the hotel. We didn't see him since although he should have taken care of our departure and 2 boat rides.
In the afternoon the driver took us to the town and somehow we managed to understand him that another 'guide' will take us around. Driver dropped us in the middle of the street downtown where Mr. Raj (so he introduced himself) took us over. We are still not sure who this person was and how did he get into this story. He lead us around the city and its winding narrow streets, we stopped by at Blue Lassi for a glass of lassie (he invited himself for a drink on our treat). He was explaining the story of his life and how he strives to provide for his family (showing us pics of some women and a child) and then took us to the evening boat ride. After that he took us back to the car park where the driver was waiting. Mr. Raj of course expected a tip (although we don't know if he was planned in this tour at all) and apparently frowned dissatisfied with the tip of 400 INR for a 2 hour guidance.
Next morning we set out to the morning boat ride and we were again handed over by the driver to Mr. Raj in the city centre. He hardly greeted us and explained that a boatman will take us to the ghat and on a boat tour. These were now 4 different people guiding us in Varanasi. After the boat ride the boatman was paid a tip by us (although the ride was included in our tour) and keep rushing us back to the car where the driver was waiting. Immediately after we set out to Sararnath. When I mentioned that we didn't visit all the sights in Varanasi, he was quite confused and called Mr. Nittin who then I spoke to and explained to him the situation. He replied that he'd see what he could do in the afternoon. The driver also didn't want to take us back due to heavy traffic and no parking in the vicinity of the sight.
Late in the afternoon Mr. Nittin called back but I had to agree at that time was no time to go back to Varanasi for the sightseeing again as our departure time was closing. The driver then explained that after lunch we were waiting for another guide who would escort us to the train as this procedure is also quite complicated. The guy came and did his job properly (against the tip, again). Although, it was obvious that we were way to early for boarding the train and both (driver and train guide) were trying to show us this church and that house along the way just to kill time and we were not interested in all that at all. So, this was person no. 5 in the Varanasi story. Besides, each expected a tip although only two persons were planned in this section of the tour!
We really were impressed with the city but REALLY unfortunately we hadn't had a chance to feel it properly. We could have spent the whole morning in Varanasi but we hadn't. Everything was done in a rush (mostly throughout tho whole journey) while before departure we were hanging around some unimportant buildings along the way to the train station.
We hereby demand an explanation around this situation that unpleasantly surprised us and would even expect some kind of compensation for that.
We were very satisfied with Mr. Narendra on the road trip in Rajastan. Very professional and accomplished gentlemen, helped us a lot on the way with guidance, advice and all we needed.
Kerala: if we planned the tour again, we would definitely skip Munnar. Too long a drive (both ways) for very little satisfaction. Beside tea museum there was nothing to write home about. Not to mention that dairy farm planned to visit as well as natural resort are closed to public. Echo point is one ridiculous place with hundreds of local tourists and there's no echo to hear. Again, the driver suggested a few activities to fill in the extra time we had left. Instead, we could have spent a day more on the beach or above all in interesting places of Rajastan (Pushkar is worth staying a day more)
India is a place that amazes every visitor with it's diversity in culture, people, countryside, food and way of life.
In Varanasi - too many people taking care of us (5!) but at the end we missed visiting an important sightseeing that was planned in our tour.
Drivers, except for Mr. Narendra, spoke very bad English and any detailed communication was impossible.
Constant impression to rush from one sight to another and too little time to just sit, observe, enjoy and embrace the experience and spend time there on the spot not just in the car.
