Our entire trip was customized by our tour advisor, Ormur, following a brief phone conversation in which I told him about some of the things we wanted to do and see during our trip. We spent four nights at the Baron Fosshotel. We really liked the very expansive breakfast offered each morning there at the hotel. The day that we arrived we took a free walking tour from the City Walk group throughout Reykjavik. We had kind of a brunch at Sandholt's bakery and then dined on the world-reknown Icelandic Hot Dogs! They were probably the best hot dogs that we have ever eaten!! We then visited the Kolaportio flea market. We ended our first day by dining at the Bruggins brewery and pub. Our Northern Lights tour scheduled for our first night there in Reykjavik was cancelled due to cloudy weather and rainy conditions.
Our next day was spent on the Golden Circle and Fontana Wellness tour. The beauty of the rugged countryside during our first trip tp Pingvellir was absolutely stunning! My favorite part of the tour was the visit to see the Geysirs and the geothermal springs bubbling nearby. It was a bit overcast by the time we reached Gullfoss but, we were able to get some great photos. Our final stop for the day was the Fontana Wellness Spa where we got to sample some of the rye bread baked underground over one of the small bubbling hot springs at the edge of the lake.
Our third full day of our visit was spent on the South Shore Adventure tour. We got to see several of the glaciers in the area, as well as the black volcanic sand and rock beaches along the south shores to the Atlantic Ocean. We stopped at a small seismic monitoring station where the earthquake activity for seven of the regions of Iceland was displayed on monitor screens. We learned that there are minor earthquakes somewhere in Iceland on a daily basis. That evening we got to take the rescheduled Northern Lights tour. We made it out barely half way to our destination in the Western fjords when, a display of the Northern Lights was spotted by our tour guide. We pulled off the road at the nearest safe spot and were then treated to a magnificent display of the dancing lights! We were fortunate enough to not only see the more common greenish lights but, we also saw some vivid oranges and purple lights across the skies. The spectacle lasted for about twenty minutes before clouds and fog started to cover the aerial display.
Our last full day was spent in the morning on Faxafloi Bay on a whale-watching trip - we did get to see a number of the Minke whales along with several harbor porpoises and one lone Puffin. We spent that last afternoon relaxing in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon. What a soothing and healthy way to end our trip. We returned to our hotel and prepared for our early morning flight back to the United States. We will definitely be returning to Iceland for another visit within the next couple of years! What a memorable trip!!! Thanks so much to Ormur, our travel agent!
Besides being one of the best trips we have ever taken, we got to see a dazzling display of the Northern Lights! Our time at the Blue Lagoon was so very relaxing. We still have more to see just in Reykjavik as, we didn't have enough time between tours and trips to really spend the time in seeing all of the sights. We were able to take a lot of photos even though we had rain at least once every day except for our last day for whale watching and the visit to the Blue Lagoon. We loved the beers of Iceland and the cold pure water from the underground glacial springs. As far as the food options available, we loved the various lamb dishes, the burgers and of course, the Hot Dogs! We really liked the Icelandic Cod and other locally caught varieties of fish.
I would say that the only bad part of our trip was the visit to the Myrdalsjokull glacier during our South Shore Adventure. When we first stepped off of our bus to begin the journey out to the glacier, it was only sprinkling rain. However, once we all got about halfway to the glacier, the rain started to fall very heavily and, the wind started blowing that heavy rain sideways. Even though we were all wearing ponchos, our pants and jeans were totally soaked! Once we got back to the bus and continued on our way, the rain stopped and the sun came out for most of the rest of the day. That was really the only bad experience that we had during our stay in Reykjavik.
