Kbal Spean is part of Angkor's archaeological sites, and it's one of the most sacred places in Cambodian Buddhist history.
My suggestion
Spend a day at Phnom Kulen and stop at Kbal Spean, with a local guide to really understand the spot's magnitude and sacredness, which might otherwise remain rather obscure to the visitor.

Plan to get up early in the morning. Take the time to stop and admire the sunrise from Banteay Kdei on the way here (which is something your driver will likely suggest doing anyway): it is simply magnificent!
