Katherine is a medium sized town situated in the middle of the desert on theStuart Highway, between Alice Springs and Darwin.

My suggestion

Avoid the hot, humid season between December and April, so as to benefit from mild desert temperatures.

It is a little jewel in the desert regions of Australia. I recommend that you spend 1 or 2 days in the area around Katherine to explore its multiple gorges, streams and caves.
